NSW: 81-year-old woman killed in crash
SYDNEY, Dec 9 AAP - An 81-year-old Portland woman has died and two other people arefighting for their lives after a head-on crash in western NSW.
Two women and a man were trapped in the two vehicles involved in the incident at Lithgow,a NSW police spokesman said.
The elderly woman who died was travelling as a front seat passenger in a white HyundaiExcel when the accident occurred at 1.40pm (AEDT) yesterday.
The Hyundai - driven by a 42-year-old woman from Lithgow - collided head-on with ablue Ford Telstar driven by a 43-year-old man from Greystanes.
The Telstar was travelling southbound on the Castlereagh Highway, the spokesman said.
Both drivers were trapped for several hours before being released and flown by Careflightto Nepean Hospital, where their condition was described as critical.
The elderly woman died while emergency rescue services tried to free her from the Hyundaicar, the spokesman said.
The road was cleared by 8.30pm (AEDT) and all traffic was diverted while police carriedout investigations.
