'WIN THE FIRST GAME' AFTER 10-YEAR LAYOFF, FOOTBALL IS BACK AT SCHALMONT.(Sports)

It was an unusual sight at Schalmont High School at the end of the day Wednesday. Players in football pads, leaning against the wall of the corridor leading to the locker rooms.

They talked about girls, automobiles ... and anxiously awaited the start of practice.

Inside the locker room, Coach Jeff Taft, a Scotia native who graduated from Cortland State before spending six years coaching in Virginia, taped the ankles of players.

On the inside door of every player's locker something else is taped - a sign that reads: "Win the first game."

Varsity football at Schalmont is back ... after a 10-year absence.

Schalmont will visit Coxsackie Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a Capital Conference game - one of 29 opening games this weekend in Section II.
